Louisiana Derby Preview

Derby News 03/21/2018 The Grade II Louisiana Derby is on Saturday, March 24 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. It offers a $1,000,000 purse along with 100 Derby points to the winner. The 2 nd place finisher will earn 40 points, which should be enough to guarantee a spot in the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby. Weekend Review - The Curse of Apollo and Witch Hunts

Weekend Racing Recap We only had one major Derby prep this past weekend - the Grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, March 17th. The Todd Pletcher trained Magnum Moon remained unbeaten with a 3 1/2 length victory. It was his 3rd victory this year and put him in company with Justify as horses attempting to break the "Curse of Apollo". Apollo's win in the 1882 Derby was the last time a horse won the Run for the Roses after being unraced as a 2 year old. Magnum Moon's next race will likely be in the Arkansas Derby on April 14th. The 2nd place finisher was the pre-race favorite Solomini. Combatant was in the Show position with Title Ready and Sporting Chance racing fourth and fifth. Can Magnum Moon win the Derby? Of course he could. One of the arguments against such horses winning is that by being unraced at 2, a horse lacks the foundation to race 1 1/4 miles on the first Saturday in May. A horse of a another color is an idiom defined by the freedictionary.com as s omething completely different or separate, especially in comparison to something else. Welcome to Horse Of Another Color , my first foray into blogging. Originally, I intended this as a blog about thoroughbred horseracing written from the perspective of a fan and casual bettor with something for the novice and the serious fan both. True to the name though, this has morphed into something different. Horseracing will be the focus during Triple Crown season and prior to major races, but I plan to also delve into many other topics while providing social commentary based on stream of consciousness reactions to current events. I will not be gossipy, but rather I will provide a dose of some common sense reality, relying on critical thinking, rationality, and logic.
